SUBJECT

Dual Mass Flywheel - Diagnosis and Inspection

MODEL

All models equipped with dual-mass flywheel, except Motorsport vehicles

INFORMATION

Prior to condemning the dual-mass flywheel as defective, the following three criteria have to be checked and evaluated:

1. Total rotational angle at no load condition (with applied torque less then 20 Nm)

2. Secondary plate longitudal axial play

3. Friction surface appearance changes due to thermal overload.

PROCEDURE

Refer to the attached "Dual-mass Flywheel Inspection" document for the complete inspection procedure.

The dual-mass flywheel replacement is justified only if one or more of the following criteria are met:

1. The total rotational free-play, measured at the flywheel gear ring, is equal or greater than 7 tooth gaps.

2. The secondary plate total axial bearing play, measured at outside diameter of the flywheel, is equal or greater than 5 mm.

3. A significant discoloration in the adjoining area outside the friction ring, or a severe ablation/erosion of the friction area, is present.

MY 2009, 2010 E71 - X6 xDrive 35i with N54

SITUATION

BMW has become aware of a potential problem that could affect the durability of the High-pressure Fuel Pump (HDP) of certain MY 2007, 2008,

2009, and 2010-2020 BMW automobiles equipped with N54 engines. We estimate that only a small percentage of vehicles will actually develop a

problem. Vehicles affected may have the Service Engine Soon lamp illuminated with various low fuel pressure-related faults (e.g., 29DC, 29F1,

29F2, 2FBF) stored in the Engine Control Module (DME). Also, the affected vehicles may experience an extended engine starting time ("long

crank") or reduced engine performance ("engine failsafe mode") when the High-pressure Fuel Pump malfunctions.

CORRECTION

In the event that the High-pressure Fuel Pump of a MY 2007, 2008, 2009, or 2010 3 Series vehicle (335i/xi Sedan, Coupe or Convertible); MY

Convertible); MY 2009 or 2010 Z4 xDrive 35i; and MY 2009 or 2010 X6 xDrive 35i equipped with the N54 engine exhibits the symptoms listed

above, it should be replaced with the improved part (P/N 13 51 7 613 933). For HDP diagnostic and replacement instructions, refer to SI B12 55 06

and REP 13 51 017.

IMPORTANT:

[NEW] Starting on Monday, November 1st, 2010, a TC part authorization for the HDP pump replacement is NOT required.

EMISSIONS WARRANTY INFORMATION

Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

As a commitment to our customers and to demonstrate our confidence in our product, BMW will extend the emissions warranty of the High-pressure

Fuel Pump (HDP) from 4 years or 50,000 miles to 10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The emissions warranty extension for this component applies to the above-listed models only, and is transferable to any subsequent purchaser of

these models.

This extended emissions warranty is applicable to vehicles registered in all 50 states.

Warranty coverage for all other parts is not affected.

BMW will inform all affected owners of the above-listed models of their extended High-pressure Fuel Pump emissions warranty. A sample letter is

shown.

SITUATION

The customer may complain of a slight vibration and/or droning noise when the vehicle is idling in park, neutral, drive and reverse when the engine

is at operating temperature.

CAUSE

Insufficient vibration dampening of the exhaust system

PROCEDURE

E60 with N52 - Proceed to step 4.

1. Verify the complaint. Vibration and/or droning is most prevalent when the engine is at operating temperature.

2. Remove the lower bracket for the exhaust system. If the droning/vibration is gone, proceed to step three. If vibration/droning still exists with the

lower bracket removed, continue troubleshooting the exhaust/driveline for other causes or conditions.

The tire valves for use with Tire Pressure Monitor Systems have been redesigned. The new style valves (on the right in the illustration) can be

identified by the smaller/conventional type cap (1) and the tapered seat at the valve's base (3).

^ The sealing washer (indicated by the arrow) is no longer required with the new style valve.

^ The valve has been modified in the area of the rubber seal (3).

^ The only component which is interchangeable between the two valves is the valve cap (1). When replacing a tire valve, the old cap can be reused,

if necessary, to ensure that all the tire valves are fitted with matching caps.

^ Always refer to the Repair Manual for proper installation instructions, including tightening torques.

SUBJECT

Proper Installation of BMW Carpet Floor Mats

MODEL

All

SITUATION

The intent of this bulletin is to ensure proper carpet floor mat installation and increase customer satisfaction. Our internal quality observations have

shown that improper floor mat installation can occur during the new car preparation or when the service department is detailing the interior. Also, the

customer or car wash attendant may remove the floor mats for interior cleaning. This can lead to damage to the retaining system and result in

improper installation. The installation guide attached is also included with the new floor mat sets. These installation instructions must be reviewed

and followed while installing the floor mats. The installation guide must also be given to the customer for future reference.

CAUSE

The center installations of floor mats are inconsistent.

SUBJECT

Creaking Noise from Top of Door Frame and Window

MODEL

E60, E61 (5 Series)

E70 (X5)

E71, E72 (X6)

F01, F02 (7 Series)

SITUATION

A creaking noise is generated from the top of the door window area while driving. The noise level varies based on road conditions, temperature and

humidity. If the door window is lowered, the noises stop.

CAUSE

The door seal at the top of the door window frame causes the noise where it makes contact with the vehicle roof Dirt and silicon-based products

negatively impact the flocking of the seal.

CORRECTION

Install a strip of clear Teflon tape to the painted roof area where the door seal meets the roof.

PROCEDURE

Refer to attachment B512810.
